Cane Carving Tips

For those who may have a problem carving a Purple Heart on a cane, I am using a method that looks good and is quite easy to do.

I make a picture of a Purple Heart (from a GOOGLE image search) the size I want it to be and print it out. I tape the image in the place I want it on the cane and burn in the design with my wood burner. Start in the center and work your way out or you may lose the pattern before you get finished. You then have a good outline for painting or carving in the details if you prefer.

The use of the pattern allows the image to be smoother than when I do it freehand and you can do some pretty intricate insignia’s using this method.

On several of the Purple Hearts I have done, I have added a red, white & blue ribbon “holding” it on the shaft of the cane. I think it adds a lot to the final look.
